Trans-Siberian Railway(Транссибирская магистраль, Trans-Siberian Railway, TSR)

From Vladivostok to St-Petersburg

The main route of the Trans-Siberian originates in Moscow at Yaroslavsky Vokzal, runs through Yaroslavl, Chelyabinsk, Omsk, Novosibirsk, Irkutsk, Ulan-Ude, Chita and Khabarovsk to Vladivostok via southern Siberia and was built from 1891 to 1916 for 25 years under the supervision of government ministers of Russia.

The Trans-Siberian Railway is often associated with the main transcontinental Russian line that connects hundreds of large and small cities of the European and Asian parts of Russia. At 9,259 kilometers (5,753 miles), spanning a record seven time zones and taking eight days to complete the journey, it is the third-longest single continuous service in the world, after the Moscow–Pyongyang (10,267 km, 6,380 mi) and the Kiev–Vladivostok (11,085 km, 6,888 mi) services, both of which also follow the Trans-Siberian for much of their routes.

 II.         Objectives

Korean Global Foundation(KGF) is planning the Trans-Siberian excursion project with the wishes for future Korean unification by visiting various places well preserving the history and culture such as Vladivostok in Russia called as Naples of Asia, the maritime province of Siberia of pursuing the Balehae history which governed the Northeast Asia, Irkutsk fraught with the history of Korea and called as Paris of Siberia, lake Baikal, the origin of human civilization, further the residences of independentistas Sang Sol Lee and Jae Hyeong Choi and other historical places of interim government of Korea and independent movement.

Trans-Siberian excursion for 15 days would give you the most impressive opportunities to feel the past history and see the new future. It will remind you of the history of independentista who fought against Japanese imperialism, and the railroad implies the strong will of patriotic martyr Lee Jun who went to Hague through this railroad to reveal forcibleness of Japan. Additionally, it would make you feel mournful towards forcible resettlement of Koreans to central-Asia in 1937 during Stalin government and a journey with footsteps of deportation and banishment to Siberia by Bolshevik revolution.

This project is aimed to broaden historic and world vision and through this to develop the plans for the new future and prosperity, further to inspire the pride as the Korean nationality by visiting historical places of Balhae and anti-Japanese movement and settlement of Koreans in Russia. The importance of Northeast Asia Economic bloc increases by the rapid growth of Economy and globalization in Northeast Asia, and exchanges and cooperation with Eurasia based on Russia is emerged as the issue of the times for peaceful unification and prosperity. At this moment, the aim of this project properly fits with the need to search for the new directions for challenges.

▣ Cabin Type

2 people-sharing cabin(Люкс) / 4 people-sharing cabin(Купе) / 6 people-sharing cabin(Плацкарт)

▷ Most-used cabin type is 4 people-sharing cabin (coupe), which is the most suitable type cost-wise and efficiency-wise. 6 people-sharing cabin is recommendable for the students or group tourists looking for the lower priced items and 2 people sharing cabin would be good for those who like independent and quiet place.

▣ Cabin Facilities

▷ Sleeping gear (blanket, mattress, pillow): Upon boarding on the train, the attendant would give you the new blanket and pillow cover. You have to return them after using. Sometimes, cover rental fee might be charged according to the train type. (It would cost about 100 rubles)

▷ Lights: There are central lights in the cabin and private lights above of your head of bed.

▷ Dining Table: One table is shared by the people in one cabin therefore it is usual to use by taking turns.

▷ Others: There is ladder going up to the upper-deck bed and the luggage can be stored under the bed on the lower-deck bed. You can lock the door from the inside and the mirror is attached on the door.

▣Train Facilities

▷ Lavatories: There are two lavatories at the front and the end of the each car. A basin and a toilet are equipped in a lavatory. Washing face or hair might be possible in the basin but you might need some other tools such as the bottle or bowl to wash hair or take a shower.

▷ Hot water dispenser: The hot water dispenser called Russian “Samovar” is equipped at the front and end of each car. It can be efficiently-used for instant food.

▷ Attendant room: Usually 2-3 attendants are working together managing the passengers, identifying the loading and unloading passengers and solving the conflicts and problems in any cases.

▷ Dining car: The red-colored car in the middle of train is the dining car, the cost is relatively reasonable.

(about USD 10~20) but to save your budget, you can eat your own prepared-food not using the dining car every time.

▷ Sockets: You can use 220V socket not in the cabin but in the corridor usually nearest the toilet. Therefore, it would be better fully charge the electronics before on board.

▣Necessary Items

▷ Clothes: Casual clothes (to wear on the train to move flexibly in the small space), thin long or short-sleeved shirts (it is warm on the train), sleepers and etc.

▷ Toiletries & Daily necessaries: Towel, tooth paste, tooth brush, wet tissue, soap, shampoo, drier, toilet paper, facial cleansing tissue, razor, first-aid medicine.

▷ Food & Beverage- water, instant coffee, tea bags, plastic chopsticks, cups, plastic bags, dried food, snacks (candy, chocolate, biscuits)

▷ Cash: Credit card cannot be used on the train or at the stations so you should prepare for some cash in Rubles.

▣Killing Time on the Train

▷ you can spend your time on the train with the camera, video camera, books, magazines, or enjoy the scenery out of windows.

While the trains stop at the stations, you can try the local foods (boiled eggs, grilled chicken, pies, bread, sausage, milk, yogurt, and sunflower seed)

▣Other information

▷ Time difference: As the time table on the train tickets is based on Moscow time, please consider the time difference all the time.

▷ Toilet: Toilet is not available for about 30 minutes before and after stopping at main stations. Average stoppage time at the small stations is usually about 3-5 minutes but about 15-30 minutes at the main station.

▷ Robbery: You must keep and protect your valuables on the train from burglars.

▷ Lady/men: Seats are not separated by lady/men section. You should ask to be excused to change the clothes or other cases.
